The Girls, 2019

Single channel video, Colour, Sound, 02’24”

Rooted in the figurative, Burton’s work depicts young girls on the cusp of womanhood who are connected by their dress and ritualistic behaviour. The medium of live-action footage invites the viewer to reflect on spiritual communities that they have witnessed or personally been a part of. The alternating audio within The Girls brings into question whether the situation is wholesome or one that is menacing. Situated within the realm of The New Weird, Burton’s work holds space for speculation, inviting the viewer to surrender to the unexplained.
